1. Change the situation

Avoid the stressor. Learn how to say “no,” you don’t need to save the world all in one day. Avoid the people who stress you out. If someone makes you want to rip your hair out, don’t go grab a coffee with him or her. Pare down your to-do list. Express your feelings instead of bottling them up. Be willing to compromise and be more assertive. Manage your time so you make time for you!

2. Change your reaction

Adapt. Reframe your problems. Look at the big picture, sometimes just because your boyfriend doesn’t text you back in 0.5 seconds does not mean that he is cheating on you. Adjust your standards. Focus on the positive. Accept that you cannot control everything.

3. Make time for fun!

Go for a walk. Spend time with nature. Call on a good friend. Sweat out tension with a good workout. Write in your journal. Take a long bath with scented candles, bath bubbles and a glass of wine. Put on your favorite song, turn up the volume, grab a spatula or some other pseudo microphone and dance around the room.

4. Adapt a healthy lifestyle

Exercise regularly. Eat well. Get enough sleep. Reduce caffeine and sugar.

A Bloody Mary is a popular cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and usually other spices or flavorings such as Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, beef consommé or bouillon, horseradish, celery, olive, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon juice, and celery salt. The origin of the Bloody Mary is disputed. Fernand Petiot is said to have invented the drink in 1921 while working at Harry’s Bar in Paris, France, a frequent hangout for Ernest Hemingway and other American expatriates. Another story is that it was originally created by George Jessel around 1939. The Bloody Mary is intended to cure hangovers and so is generally served in the morning. To whom ever created this fine concoction, cheers to you!

Ingredients

Bloody Mary recipe courtesy of the New York School of Bartending:

1 oz. to 1 1/2 oz. (30-45 ml) vodka in a Highball glass filled with ice.

Fill glass with tomato juice

1 dash celery salt

1 dash ground black pepper

1 dash Tabasco

2-4 dashes of Lea & Perrin’s Worcestershire sauce

1/8 tsp. horseradish (pure, never creamed)

Dash of lemon or lime juice

Garnish with celery stalk.

May be shaken vigorously or stirred lazily, as desired. Garnish with a celery stalk; a skewer of olives, pickles, carrots, mushrooms, or other vegetables; or even meat or fish (salami, shrimp, etc.) and cheese. Occasionally, pickled asparagus spears or pickled beans are also used.

This full-flavor sun-dried tomato pasta is richer and sweeter with roasted eggplant and onions. Salting your eggplant halves and covering with a towel for 30 minutes before preparing will help the vegetable retain its firm texture. After soaking, rinse, drain, and pat dry the eggplant before baking. Serve this sensational pasta with creamy goat cheese crumbles, snips of fresh basil, and a crispy dinner roll.

ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, cut into 8 wedges
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium eggplant (about 1 pound), halved lengthwise
  • 6 ounces dried ziti, rigatoni, or penne pasta
  • 1/3 recipe Dried Tomato Pesto (see recipe below)
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • Salt
  • 2 tablespoons crumbled goat cheese (chevre) or feta cheese (optional)
  • Snipped fresh basil (optional)

directions

  1. Place onion in a large shallow baking pan; brush with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Roast in a 425 degree F oven for 10 minutes; stir. Brush eggplant with remaining olive oil. Place eggplant in pan, cut sides down. Roast 15 minutes more or until onion is golden brown and eggplant is tender.
  2. Meanwhile, cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Add Dried Tomato Pesto and black pepper to pasta; toss gently to coat. Transfer pasta to a warm serving dish; keep warm.
  3. Cut eggplant into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Toss eggplant and onion with pasta. Season to taste with salt. Top with cheese and basil, if desired. Makes 4 servings.
  4. Dried Tomato Pesto: Drain 3/4 cup oil-pack dried tomatoes, reserving oil. Add enough olive oil to the reserved oil to make 1/2 cup; set aside. Place tomatoes, 1/4 cup pine nuts or slivered almonds, 1/4 cup snipped fresh basil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 4 teaspoons bottled minced garlic in a food processor. Cover; process until finely chopped. With machine running, gradually add the oil, processing until almost smooth. Divide pesto into thirds. Refrigerate or freeze unused portions. Makes three 1/3-cup portions.

1. RUN! Most bar fights stem from jealousy, intoxication and misunderstandings. When some people drink a switch is flipped and they become hypersensitive and irrational. In this drunken state, there will be no winner. So it’s best to avoid the fight all together.

2. Assess the situation. Ask yourself these simple questions: Is this a bar I ever want to go to again? Am I going to regret this in the morning? How drunk is my opponent? How drunk am I? Who has more friends behind them? What would Borracha do?

3. Stand by bartenders and bouncers. They will be the first to break up a fight and their presence will probably even diffuse a rumble before it starts. So, if you want to keep your manicure intact, edge your way closer to these burly men.

4. Take a defensive stance. Lean forward, guard your face with your hands, and firmly plant your feet.

5. Give your best war cry. This will not only intimidate your opponent but also will draw attention. With more attention shining on you, there is a higher chance that your rival will back down. Or he will just think you are a crazy and he will go running for the hills!

6. Act like the victim. This will be your best chance at avoiding criminal charges and being thrown out of the bar.

You never have a second chance to make a first impression, so it is very important to dress the part. Dress well and you will be treated well. It is also important to act the part, and here’s how…

To eliminate the hassle of waiting for the bill and the awkwardness of who should pay, you can go into the restaurant to pay in advance. This will also give you an in with the headwaiter, manager or maitre d’. You can introduce yourself to the host who will be greeting you and then you can be greeted by name when you arrive. Everyone likes to be known right??

Befriend your server. They will usually tell you their name, but be sure to tell him your name. Ask what he recommends, or suggestions for what to do after dinner.

Become a regular. When you frequent a restaurant, the staff learns who you are and your tastes. So becoming a regular can mean anything from being greeted by name to a free tasting of a new wine they just got in.

Don’t be obnoxious; handing the host a folded twenty only works in movies. Don’t act like you should get VIP service; be humble. You are more likely to be treated to perks if you are genuine and generous to your service.

One thing that can really ease the tension of a stuffy restaurant is to buy the chef and maitre d’ a shot of nice tequila. Seriously, this will ensure fine treatment for the rest of the night. One time I did this and the chef came out to meet our table and we received complementary desserts and drinks! I only wish we had done this sooner!

The best thing to do when dinning is to feel out the atmosphere and act accordingly. You wouldn’t want to try any of these tips at a restaurant like Applebee’s. As the “golden rule” goes, treat others how you would like to be treated. Happy dining new VIPs!

1. Be Prepared

Have your money in hand and know what you are going to order. The more efficient your order is the more appreciative the bartender will be and hopefully he will favor you when you go back to order round two.

2. Choose your spot wisely

If there are two bartenders, stand in between their “territories.” You will usually will get served first because the bartenders want to secure their tips.

3. Snake your hand through the crowd until it touches the bar

Placing your hand on the bar is like placing a flag in the ground, the territory is now yours. Once your hand is secure, ease your way through the open spaces when people clear out. When you reach the bar face your body horizontally to the bar and put both hands on the bar.

4. Catch the bartender’s eye as soon as possible

Give him a nice smile and tilt your chin up. This lets him know that you are there and ready to order. Don’t yell “bartender,” wave your money around, snap your fingers or shout “I’m next” or “I was here first,” unless of course you want to be continually ignored for the rest of the night.

5. Give your order quickly, loudly, and clearly

This goes along the same lines of be prepared. You want to start a good relationship with the bartender, so the more smoothly your order goes the better relationship you will have.

6. Tip generously

It is kind of a no brainer that the better you tip the better you will be served, but this holds especially true at bars. The bigger the tip, the more likely the bartender will serve you immediately and skip over other people to do so.

7. Flirting

In most jobs flirting is considered demeaning, pretentious, taboo and just outright rude. However, when played right, flirting at a bar can quickly escalate you from a plain face in the crowd to number one customer. Just make sure you aren’t sloppy-drunk flirting.

8. Friends and Regulars

Everyone favors their friends over random strangers. So come in on a slow night and start up a conversation with the bartender. You will probably learn some interesting things and may even get some free drinks out of it. Trust me, this one works for sure.
