Believe it or not, the Martin and Weyrich families started growing grapes in Paso Robles on April Fool’s Day (of all days!) of 1981....when there were only a few other wineries in the area. They initially set out to grow and produce Nebbiolo, a red grape from the Piedmont region of Italy and with great success they also began to produce Sangiovese, Primativo (the Italian name for Zinfandel), Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their focus is international—producing wines from not only Italy, but also France, Portugal, and Spain. Martin and Weyrich produce some absolutely amazing wines that have won numerous awards…earning a spot in the “Top 100 Wines of the Year” by the San Francisco Chronicle for their 2003 Nebbiolo, and winning “Best Wine of Competition” at the 2008 Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition for their 2003 Nebbiolo II Vecchio.
