Believe it or not, the Martin and Weyrich families started growing grapes in Paso Robles on April Fool’s Day (of all days!) of 1981....when there were only a few other wineries in the area. They initially set out to grow and produce Nebbiolo, a red grape from the Piedmont region of Italy and with great success they also began to produce Sangiovese, Primativo (the Italian name for Zinfandel), Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nestled in the hills of San Luis Obispo between student vineyards and the cow pastures of Cal Poly is the university’s Crops Unit, where dedicated wine aficionados meet every other Tuesday to discuss wine business, enology, and viticulture—as well as partake in a little “Learn By Tasting” philosophy. The Stone Cliff Winery started selling their first bottles in 2001...all ten of their wines are top sellers in the Dubuque, Iowa area.
