Believe it or not, the Martin and Weyrich families started growing grapes in Paso Robles on April Fool’s Day (of all days!) of 1981....when there were only a few other wineries in the area. They initially set out to grow and produce Nebbiolo, a red grape from the Piedmont region of Italy and with great success they also began to produce Sangiovese, Primativo (the Italian name for Zinfandel), Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their focus is international—producing wines from not only Italy, but also France, Portugal, and Spain. Nestled in the hills of San Luis Obispo between student vineyards and the cow pastures of Cal Poly is the university’s Crops Unit, where dedicated wine aficionados meet every other Tuesday to discuss wine business, enology, and viticulture—as well as partake in a little “Learn By Tasting” philosophy. Last Tuesday I was graciously welcomed to this bi-monthly event to share my love for wine and pearly white teeth!

The Stone Cliff Winery started selling their first bottles in 2001...all ten of their wines are top sellers in the Dubuque, Iowa area. Their vines are a blend of California and Washington state varietals and they produce everything from a classic Cabernet Sauvignon to a Sweet Cranberry Wine, a crisp Chardonnay to a Late Harvest Spiced Apple. The winery also hosts many events, and on Friday and Saturday nights they have live entertainment on the baby grand piano in the tasting room.
